Four ways to look at foreign trade

Depending on what you ask, the assistant picks one of these views:

• Total: the monthly series of exports, imports and trade balance, to see the trend or the year-to-date total.
• By country: the ranking of trading partners, how much is sold to and bought from each one.
• By product: what is exported or imported within a chapter or heading of the NCM nomenclature.
• Product by country: a product crossed with its destinations or origins, such as the buyers of Argentine soy or where imported cars come from.

In every case you can narrow the period (a year, a range of months) and ask for the result as a ranking or as a series, or compare two periods by asking for both in the same query.

What the NCM is and why you don't need to know it

The Nomenclatura Común del Mercosur (NCM, the Mercosur tariff code) is the code customs uses to classify every good: the first two digits are the chapter (12 is seeds and oilseeds, 87 is vehicles), and each following pair of digits narrows it down further, up to eight. You ask for soy, lithium or wine and the assistant finds the matching chapter or heading, though you can always pass it the code if you know it. For the broader aggregates INDEC publishes (primary products, agricultural manufactures, industrial manufactures, and fuels and energy) the ICA series are also in the economic series catalog.

Limits worth knowing

The data is monthly: there is no foreign trade for today, and the latest month available is the one INDEC has already published. The dimensions are period, country and product; there is no information by exporting or importing company. Product-level detail and the product-by-country cross start in 2002; before that, only the aggregate by country is available, since 1990. When a query has no data for the requested period, the answer says so and tells you the latest month loaded, instead of returning zeros.

Sources and update frequency

• INDEC (national statistics institute): Intercambio Comercial Argentino (ICA): exports, imports and trade balance, monthly, by country and by NCM code.

The data is monthly and follows INDEC's ICA release, which comes out with a lag of about two months. Every answer tells you which is the latest month available.
